Global Positioning System (GPS)

Definition: GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that provides location and time information anywhere on Earth. It works by using a network of satellites to determine the precise location of a GPS receiver.

Usage: GPS is widely used for navigation in vehicles, smartphones, and other devices, as well as for mapping, surveying, and tracking.

“GPS” technically refers to the US version of a satellite navigation system with the more specific term GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) also including systems operated by the EU (Galileo), Japan (QZSS), Russia (GLONASS) and China (BeiDou). But in common usage “GPS” can refer to any or all of those. Recent iPhones, for example, can use all five of those satellite systems, but generally it’s called “GPS”.
